About NDLA

The Norwegian Digital Learning Arena (Nasjonal digital læringsarena) is a joint enterprise operating on behalf of the county councils in Norway. Its aim is to develop and publish high quality, internet-based open educational resources (OER) in subjects taught at upper secondary school level and make these freely available. The joint production and purchase enterprise was initiated by 18 counties in 2007 when the responsibility for the acquisition of learning content was delegated from the state to the county level. All counties except for Oslo are co-owners of NDLA, with Hordaland county as a formal judicial unit.

The journey towards Edlib

Since its inception, NDLA has been a pioneer regarding technology related to open educational resources. When the company that developed and created Flash-based interactive content, Amendor AS, started developing an alternative mobile-friendly content creation tool for interactive educational content, NDLA was fast to follow. Amendor formed Joubel in 2014, and the new company started the development of H5P (HTML5 package) with substantial contributions from NDLA. In 2022 Joubel changed its name to H5P Group.

When, in 2017-2018, NDLA migrated from their legacy Drupal platform to a more holistic architecture, the time and need for a service to integrate with and handle all aspects of H5P emerged. The resulting solution was Edlib.

How NDLA use Edlib today

Today, Edlib is integrated with NDLA's production environment making it possible to search and reuse existing H5Ps or to create new ones entirely. NDLA takes an active role in choosing the H5P libraries they want to support and has created several H5P libraries from scratch to meet their needs. NDLA also actively contributes by translating existing and new H5P content types available on the H5P GitHub.

Translation and language

A natural part of the production process of H5P-content is the creation of language variants of most H5Ps, as NDLA is obliged to provide their OERs in Norway's two official languages, Bokmål and Nynorsk. This can be done as part of the workflow of creating a copy of an article for translation purposes or directly within Edlib itself. A plugin to ease the translation work does the heavy lifting by translating on-the-fly (using a third-party translation API) when a user chooses to create a Nynorsk variant of an existing Bokmål H5P.

Script view

As part of the NDLA's work with languages and translations, they have dedicated translators working with only language-related tasks. This has led to the need for a separate "Script view" that is limited to only displaying the text inside the H5Ps, enabling the translators to focus on translating and improving language content. The "Script view" is beneficial to all of Edlib's users.

Media handling via APIs

In NDLA's case, the handling of media image, audio and video files is done through separate APIs. This means that the organization's content editors cannot upload media files directly when creating or editing H5Ps: they need to use the media that is already embedded in the H5Ps or, alternatively, access the dedicated APIs for managing media content. This is done to prohibit duplication of files and to make sure all media files are handled in a generic manner which imposes uniformity in the context of integrating and migrating to other providers at a later stage.

The video API integration

Users can access the videos within the API and are not allowed to upload files directly. A restriction on the use of YouTube and other links to provide video sources is also added to make sure all videos are handled within the API itself. Admins are alowed to access this URL field, in order to deal with special cases or remove previously added URLs:

The image API integration

As videos are bound by restritions, NDLAs image integration will also only make use of images from within the NDLA Image API. When an image is selected it's not downloaded, but retrieved from the Image API. In addition to various metadata like license, title and author, the ID of the image is stored as externalId. When content using images from the Image API is exported, the image is included in the .h5p package. The Image API ID for an image, externalId, is included in the exported data e.i. when a H5P resource is downloaded from ndla.no. This could be used to recreate the reference to the Image API. The problem is that there is no reference to what system the ID belong to, and it may also require changes to the system importing the .h5p file.

If an image is deleted the alt-text set for the image will be displayed. Since exported content contains a copy of the image, they will not be affected.

To provent loading of large images, an additional configuration setting width=2500 is added when the content is viewed. The size is a configuration setting, the default value is 2500. This functionality is not used for some content types, currently H5P.ThreeImage and H5P.NDLAThreeImage, that require the original quality.

License and attribution

NDLA is one of Norway's pioneers regarding attribution and licensing of open educational content. Having implemented Creative Commons as part of their vision for content creation, they also encouraged the companies behind H5P and Edlib to actively be part of the "commons" world. This enables NDLA to safely share their OERs which, in turn, provides their users with all the necessary license and attribution information to make safe use of them. NDLA ensures that this information is accessible to the teachers and students that need it. The attribution and license information is made available through the "Rights of use" entry on all H5P and from the Edlib APIs. Edlib has made an "copyright" endpoint available for accessing information on attribution and licenses for resources used in articles ndla.no. It can be found and tested on NDLA Swagger

Resource tracking

Edlib offers a great overview of the resources that an individual "owns" (that is, resources created by the user) and the resources created by other users within the NDLA organization. The "My Content" tab lists resources belonging to the individual user while the "Shared Content" tab list the resources created by other users.

Access to resources

All of NDLA's editorial staff need access to existing Edlib resources made by other users (even those that are potentially no longer active on the NDLA platform). For this purpose, a custom setting ensures that all resources, by default, are shared. When a user edits a resource owned by another user, a custom setting provides them with collaboration rights on the resource and adds the resource to the user's "My Content" list without making a version-controlled fork of the resource.

Editor locking

When users have access to all resources within a service, the system needs to handle situations where the users stand at risk of loosing content related to changes made by other users. Editor locking prevents such a scenario. With editor locking the user is notified that another user is already editing the (same) resource effectively locking it and the user is given the choice to try again later or to start modifying the resource and wait for the other user's lock to be released so that their changes can be saved.

The creation of resources starts by selecting the "Create Content" tab in Edlib's header bar. This brings the user to the H5P Hub where the preview and the supported H5P types are listed.

Admin features

Version control

Having used H5P from the very beginning, NDLA has a vast number of resources and needs to maintain a tight control over the upgrading of library versions. This means that the existing resources in Edlib won't be affected by a system upgrade/installation of a newer version on the same library (H5P content type). Each resource can be individually upgraded to either the next available version or directly to the latest version. In addition, the admin panel enables the maintainers to do a controlled bulk upgrade of all resources from one version to another. The admins can also get a list of content on each H5P library version and they get to see if there are any library dependancies and much more info by clicking the machine name link for the individual H5P library.

To ensure consistency regarding content type versions, Edlib will prohibit users from uploading resources with unsupported versions through the H5P hub, making upgrading a task for authorized users only.

Enabled H5P types

Edlib supports all H5P content types, and NDLA has chosen the varieties they want to keep in their H5P hub. This gives NDLA control over what content types are used. It also provides NDLA the possibility of doing a qualified review/test of the types they want before deciding to enable them for the organization as a whole. The review and testing are done in their test environment. It's important to note that all former H5P content types, with content, will be visible for filtering and search purposes within Edlib even if the content type has been disabled for the purpose of creating new content.

Custom H5P content types

NDLA has developed several H5P content types from scratch and forked existing official H5P types to add wanted functionality. These content types were made to meet the demands for providing high-quality learning resources. The content types are made to work within Edlib and in general installations of H5P, for exmaple, via WordPress plugins. Each of the content types is accessible as a separate repository on NDLA's GitHub accounts, https://github.com/NDLANO and https://github.com/NDLA-H5P.

Summary

Through Edlib, NDLA gets to cherry-pick the best from the H5P world and mix it with custom types made from scratch or forked from existing ones. NDLA meets their custom demands and features while keeping superior control over the content and versions. Finally, NDLA gets to be a part of the development of Edlib through their own requirements and inspiring dedication to digital learning through open educational resources. A perfect fit for Edlib.
